Watch Out for These Tactics an Insurance Company Might Take After a Claim is Made

In a perfect world, if a person is injured as a result of an accident, their insurance company or the insurance company of the at-fault party would immediately agree to pay a fair amount. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. If you believe you have a personal injury claim, we recommend at least consulting with an experienced attorney to make sure that you know what your options are. We also recommend looking out for these tactics.

Not Explaining the Specifics of Your Coverage

This happens well before you are involved in a car accident or other type of accident: your insurance agent simply does not explain to you what your coverage is. For example, a person who is taking out homeowners insurance might ask for minimal coverage and not be informed of what this does not cover. IT could meet the minimum required by law, but not cover many of the accidents the insured would have wanted covered.

Insurance agencies might steer you toward buying cheaper coverage because it covers much less. While they make less per month on a lower cost policy, they also pay out less over the years because not much is covered. Make sure that you always understand your coverage before you sign on to a new policy.

Trying to Convince You Not to Get Medical Care

It is much harder to recover damages for injuries if you do not have a medical record of those injuries. If your insurance agent insinuates or tells you not to receive medical care, take this advice with a grain of salt. You should seek medical care if you are in an accident, even if you are not sure that it is necessary. This creates evidence of your accident and can catch injuries you might otherwise miss.

Pressuring You to Record a Statement

You have a specific amount of time to give your insurance company a recorded statement – it is more than a few days. They may act as though it just “standard” to record a statement. They might act as though they are on your side. However, know that if what you say in your recorded statement does not match up with what you said right after the accident, or anything you say down the road, they can use this against you.

This is why we recommend not giving a recorded statement until you have talked to an attorney. When you call Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas at 909-982-0707, we can determine your best way forward and advise you before talking to the insurance company. Call us now for a free legal consultation.
