Are You Surprised by Which California City Made the List for Worst Drivers in the Country? Every year Allstate Insurance puts out a report that ranks the 200 largest cities in the country by their drivers. The ranking considers how likely people in that city are to be involved in an auto accident. This year the results weren’t surprising for one California city, which has repeatedly been at the bottom of the list for safety: Glendale. Previous and current rankings for Glendale

This is the twelfth year in a row that Glendale, which as you likely know is a suburb of Los Angeles, was in the bottom portion of this Best Drivers report. This year, they are 195 out of 200. The highest ranking in the last 12 years has been 190. Obviously, there is something going on here – but what is it?

Breaking down the statistics

The study showed that drivers in Glendale get into a car accident every five and a half years on average. In fact, these drivers are 83% more likely to get into an accident when compared to the national average. This does indeed sound alarming, but, as Glendale residents have pointed out, there’s more information to be considered.

The city spokesman for Glendale, a man by the name of Tom Lorenz, has pointed at that being that the bottom of a list that details the safest cities for drivers isn’t equal to topping a list of the most dangerous cities to drive in. He also points out that the report in question only includes the insurance claims that have been made by people who have Allstate insurance. This is a pretty small sample of the population.

He also points out that the study only deals with the number of claims – not how serious they were. For example, an insurance claim for simply backing into a garage door and causing $50 in damage is lumped in with multi-car accidents that lead to fatalities.

The California Office of Traffic Safety doesn’t necessary align with this study

According to statistics from the California Office of Traffic Safety, drivers in Glendale are actually not bad. For example, in 2014, Glendale was ranked 49th out of 57 cities of similar size. This is actually good news though – the lower the rank was, the better its drivers because the list was for overall collisions. In fact, these stats make it one of the ten safest cities out of the 57 studied. They further ranked 35th for fatal accidents and 51st for accidents involving drug drivers.
