Car Accidents and Insurance Companies: Do You Believe These Common Myths?

Car insurance can be confusing. According to one study, many car owners do not know what the difference between various coverages are, or what type of policy they even have. At Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas we work with all types of accidents that involve car insurance companies. We have compiled a list of common myths that we see believed throughout the state. If you have additional questions about car accidents, truck accidents, or other vehicle accidents, reach out to Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas at 909-982-0707 to get the answers you need.

Myth: The color of your car will affect the price of your auto insurance

Some people believe that if they buy a red car then their insurance payments are going to be higher than a person who buys a tan car. This is not true. Car insurers are indeed interested in the specifics of the car you buy, but they want to know the model, year, engine size, and body style you purchased. In some areas of California, they will also want to know if you park on the street or in covered parking. The color of your car is not a factor in pricing.

Myth: If you do not report a car accident then your rates will not go up

It happens all the time: A person gets into a car accident and decides that if they do not report the accident to the police or to their insurance company, then their insurance premiums will not go up. Unfortunately, this may not be true. If the other party does file a claim against your insurance company then you may find your rates going up. Likewise, if the police end up issuing you a ticket due to the accident then you can expect your rates to go up.

Myth: Seniors citizens pay more for car insurance

The opposite is actually true. Drivers who are at least 55 years old can qualify for reduced insurance rates in many places, as long as they complete an accident prevention course. For those who are retired, if they are also driving less then they could receive discounts of about 5% on average.

Myth: If I loan my car to a friend then I will not be responsible for any damages

If you loan your car to a friend and that friend gets into a car accident then you will be responsible for damages – even if you were not in the car. The bottom line is that your car insurance covers the vehicle you own – not the driver.
