  1. Distracted Driving
  2. The most common cause of all car accidents is distracted driving – by far. It does include the type of behavior that often immediately comes to mind for people – drivers on their phone texting, talking, or doing anything else while behind the wheel – but it can include many other types of behavior too. For example, it includes doing makeup, eating, or looking for something in the backseat.
  3. Drunk Driving
  4. While distracted driving is the top cause of all car accidents, drunk driving is the top cause of fatal accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Association, there are more than 10,000 lives lost every year in drunk driving accidents. Most people do not start off the night believing they are going to drive drunk but alcohol can reduce inhibition. This is why we recommend taking a rideshare or taxi to the bar. This leaves you with no option but to do the same on the way home.
  5. Speeding
  6. The National Safety Council completed a study that found that more than one-quarter of all fatal traffic accidents in 2018 were found to have speeding as a factor. There are several reasons that speeding is so dangerous on a motorcycle. First, the faster you are driving, the longer it takes you to stop or make other movements to avoid an accident. Second, the faster you are driving, the bigger the impact – which can result in much more serious injuries than if you were driving the speed limit.
  7. Reckless Driving
  8. This is a catch-all term for unsafe driving actions. This includes changing lanes quickly, changing lanes without signaling, and cutting off other drivers. It can include speeding up and slowing down just to aggravate others. Any action that is against the law is a reckless driving maneuver, such as speeding and drunk driving. Depending on the situation, an accident caused by reckless driving can have both civil and criminal penalties.
