If you’re like most people, when you hear the term “distracted driving” you likely think of an individual texting while driving, or otherwise using their phone. With texting while driving has indeed become an alarming cause of auto accidents in California, it’s not the only way to become distracted while driving. In fact, there’s another form of distracted driving that’s been around for many years: Loud music.
The better stereos get the more distracted drivers are likely to be
While in the past it was young people who were most well-known for listening to loud music in their cars, these days its middle aged drivers who are buying cars with incredible surround sound speakers and stereo systems. They get in their car, can’t believe how great the music sounds, and crank it up.
While this may sound like a lot of fun, there are several ways in which it can become a serious issue. First, consider that if your music is too loud, then you’re not going to be able to hear other driver’s honking or sirens from police and other emergency vehicles. A good driver will use all their sense to stay safe on the road.
There are several other issues with loud stereos
Of course, it’s unlikely you’re going to listen to the same station for hours, which means you’re going to need to surf the channels to see what else is on. These days, those with satellite radio could be surfing through hundreds of them, and for every station they scroll through, that’s another few seconds they’re taking their eyes off the road. It’s not a huge leap to see why this could lead to car, truck, and motorcycle accidents.
There are other ways you can get distracted too. If you have an older car that has a CD player, then you’re probably going through and switching between tracks. If your stereo is hooked up to your iPod or other Mp3 player, then you may be looking at that device to find the right song or podcast.
You’re not as good at multi-tasking as you think you are
People think they can multi-task, but studies have shown that the human brain can really only focus on a single thing. A driver that’s rocking out to their favorite song isn’t going to be paying as much attention to the road as they should – it’s just that simple.
