Studies Show That Victims of Brain Injuries Often Do Not Receive Adequate Ongoing Care

Recent studies have shown that even a person who suffers a “minor” brain injury can suffer serious, long-term complications. Even with this information becoming so well known, other studies show that many people who are victims of head trauma do not get the follow-up care they need – even in severe cases.

An Example of a Study Showing Lack of Long-Term Care

A study published by JAMA Network in May 2018 showed that a significant number of people who experienced severe symptoms of brain injury did not follow up with a doctor or other medical professional. The study looked at 831 patients who went to the ER to treat a mild traumatic brain injury. 42% reported that they received information when they were discharged. 44% said that they did see a medical professional within three months of the injury.

Of people who reported at last three moderate or severe symptoms after being concussed, only 52% of them followed up with a doctor or other medical professional in three months.

Following Up After a Head Injury is Essential

It may sound like a concussion is not that serious, but it can have a significant impact on brain function. The seriousness of the condition may be readily apparent, but in many cases it is not. It can take days before any recognizable signs are present. In the JAMA study described above, even when there are signs of a severe injury, nearly half of those injured will not get follow-up medical care.

Do Not Ignore These Symptoms of a Serious Head Injury

If you or a loved one experiences a headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, convulsions, lightheadedness, ringing in the ears, slurred speech, changes in sleep patterns, blurred vision, or impaired motor skills, a medical professional should be consulted immediately.

Are You Not Getting Care Due to Lack of Funds?

If you have suffered a head injury that was even partially the fault of another person or a company, then you may have grounds to sue for damages. This could pay not only your past medical bills but get you the funds you need to continue treatment. If you believe that someone else is liable for your injury, contact Law Offices of Fernando D.
