How to Stay Safe During the Upcoming Thanksgiving Season

Thanksgiving may seem like it’s a long ways away but it’s actually just a number of weeks. Many families in California plan huge meals and decorate their homes. At Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas, we love how warm and inviting Thanksgiving is – but there are also many potential dangers this time during the year. Follow these tips to stay safe and remember to call us at 909-982-0707 if you’ve been injured as the result of someone else’s negligence.

Know what you’re facing

Many people don’t think they need these tips but would you be surprised that there are more than 4,000 fires on average every Thanksgiving? If following these tips can prevent burn injuries and other problems then they’re well worth it. Here are ten tips that are highly recommended for your safety and that of your family and friends:

  • Don’t leave anything that’s cooking unattended. This means your grill, stove, and oven.
  • Make sure you use a timer when you’re cooking. As you’re chatting with your guests, it’s too easy to get lost in time and forget to check on your food – which could not only mean a ruined dinner but could lead to a fire hazard.
  • Take a look at what you’re wearing. Baggy clothes and dangling necklaces, earrings, and other accessories can catch on fire, get caught on the stove, and create other issues.
  • You should always have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, know where it is, and check it to make sure it’s not expired.
  • A week before Thanksgiving, take a walk around the house to make sure all your smoke alarms are working the way they should.
  • If you do end up with a fire, don’t try to put it out with water. Have a box of baking soda handy instead. It will smother the flames without raising the risk of spreading – which water can do.
  • You may want to light candles for your dinner and that’s fine, just make sure they’re not left unattended and that they’re isolated.
  • Keep your kids and pets out of the kitchen.
  • If you’re not using an accessory, unplug it. This is good advice to help you keep your electrical bills down but it can also prevent accidents when you have a lot of people in your home.
