Understanding the way the ankle works

The ankle is actually a complex joint that’s made up of three bones: The talus, fibula, and tibia. All three bones are encased within a membrane that’s known as the joint capsule. Within that joint capsule is yet another layer that’s known as the synovium. It contains all the fluid that helps your bones move over one another when you walk. Then there are tendons and ligaments that hold these joints together. As you can imagine, even a small injury to one of these parts can have a big impact.

The various types of ankle injuries

There are a number of injuries that a person can suffer to their ankle. Some of the most common include:

  • Sprains or strains. This most commonly happens when a person bends their ankle awkwardly, which results in their ligaments stretching or being damaged. This can be very painful and can make it hard to walk for weeks or even months.
  • Tears. If you tear the tendon or the cartilage in the ankle joint, the joint can be weakened. This is painful and can take many months to heal.
  • Fractures. If you break any of the three bones within the ankle joint, permanent mobility limitations can result.

There can be many types of ankle injuries

The ankle can be injured in just about any way you can imagine, but slip and fall accidents are common causes. How serious the injury is or what type of injury it is will depend on how the person in question fell and what joint they put pressure on. It’s common for a person to try and catch themselves by stepping down too hard, which can put undue stress on the ankle. If the ankle then turns or twists unnaturally, the injury can be even more serious.
