Why do vehicles roll in the first place?

There are actually a number of reasons that vehicles can rollover. Some of the most common include:

  • Speed. About 40% of rollover accidents are found to have been partially caused by high speeds. Three out of every four rollover accidents happen on roads with speed limits of 55 miles per hour and up. Speed can make it harder for drivers to control their vehicles, and if they jerk their steering wheel while traveling at a fast pace, the vehicle could rollover.
  • Driver error. The sad truth is that drivers often make mistakes. It may be that an emergency happened and the driver panicked, or the driver may have drifted out of their lane or even onto the shoulder of the road.
  • Impairment. About half of rollover accidents involved alcohol. A driver who has been impaired by using alcohol has impaired judgment, vision, response time, and coordination. It is no wonder that they are more likely to get into a rollover accident.
  • Issues with tires. If a tire is worn down, then it cannot grip the road as well as it should. This gives a driver less control. If the tires are not inflated correctly then they are more likely to overheat and blow out. In either situation, it’s likely that a person will panic, which can cause them to make a sudden movement that rolls the vehicle.
  • Defective design. Any vehicle is capable of rolling given the right circumstances, but the taller and more top-heavy a vehicle is, the more likely it is to roll. That said, some vehicles are designed is such a way that they can roll with very little provocation.
  • Collisions. When a vehicle collides with another vehicle a rollover can occur, especially when the road is slippery.
  • Tripped rollover accident. This means that a vehicle ran over something that threw it off balance. That could be a stone, guardrail, debris on the road, etc.
