Learn about the Ways a Vehicle with a Keyless Ignition Could Be Responsible for Accidents and Injuries

In the early 2000s, keyless ignition systems initially appeared on luxury automobiles, and they have subsequently become increasingly widespread in mid-range models as well. Unfortunately, as the number of people who use keyless ignition grows, a few important safety problems have surfaced.

What is keyless ignition and how does it work?

All of your automobile keys may be replaced with a single electronic key fob with keyless ignition systems. When you are within range, this key fob acts as a radio transponder, communicating with your vehicle. The key fob must be in close proximity to the car for the engine to start. Unlike a regular key, however, removing the key fob from the vehicle does not turn off the engine or require the gearbox to be placed in park. As a result, some drivers have been confused, and major accidents have occurred.

Keyless ignition poses three safety risks

Carbon monoxide poisoning has claimed the lives of at least a dozen people who have left their automobiles running in confined locations such as garages. These people—and others who were lucky enough to avoid harm—did not understand their automobiles would keep running after they removed the key from the vehicle, thinking it would turn off the engine.

Accidents involving rollaway vehicles. With a standard ignition system, removing the key without first putting the car in park is difficult. This is much easier to perform with a keyless ignition device. Some drivers have left their automobiles in gear and without the parking brake engaged, causing the vehicle to roll down an incline and collide with another vehicle.

One last safety worry is that folks who do not understand how their keyless ignition system works may be unable to switch off their engines in an emergency. Alternatively, they may grow agitated and forget to switch off the engine. This might put you in grave risk.

Who is responsible for accidents caused by keyless ignition?

It may be feasible to prove that both the driver and the manufacturer were negligent, depending on the circumstances of the accident. In the instance of a parking-related accident, this might be a valid claim. A federal lawsuit has been filed against ten manufacturers for carbon monoxide poisoning, saying that their failure to provide proper precautions while knowing of the hazards holds them accountable for the fatalities.
