California Drivers Are Not Immune to Weather-Related Accidents

California drivers sometimes feel they are immune to bad-weather accidents because we are immune from most types of bad weather. However, the truth is that cloudy days are very dangerous, even if there is no rain. Keep reading to learn more about these dangers and do not forget to contact Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas at 909-982-0707 if you are in a car accident and in need of a free legal consultation.

Cloudy Conditions Are the Top Weather-Related Cause of Fatal Car Accidents

Believe it or not, according to a study from the National Highway Traffic Association (NHTSA), cloudy conditions are the number one weather-related cause of fatal vehicle accidents. In the average year, about 5,000 fatal accidents were at least partially contributed to cloudy weather conditions.

Why? Because cloudy skies make it more dangerous to drive due to reduced visibility. When it is cloudy, it is harder to see potholes, dangerous debris in the road, and other issues. It is also dangerous because people do not realize that cloudiness is actually dangerous. As a result, they do not take the steps they could to drive more safely in cloudy weather.

The Most Common Time of Year for Car Accidents

The highest number of accidents is in the summer, for a few reasons. First, there are generally more people on the road. This is especially true in California as tourists pour in and locals head to the beach. Summer also sees younger, more inexperienced drivers taking to the roads at all times of the day.

That said, most car accidents that are the result of bad weather happen between the months of November and February. In the month of December, there are generally around 1,000 fatal crashes. In other parts of the country, December has some of the most treacherous driving conditions with rain, snow, sleet, fog, and increased win.

That said, none of these dangerous weather-related issues come close to cloudiness in how many fatal crashes they cause. According to statistics, rain results in about 2,750 fatal accidents per year, and snow and fog each cause about 400 per year. Of course, part of the reason there are more accidents during cloudy weather is that there are more cloudy days around the country than there are days with ice, fog, and other weather issues.
