Pony.ai is using their ten automated SUVs to deliver groceries, packages, and other items in Irvine. Earlier, the company suspended automated vehicle operation with passengers due to the pandemic. The vehicles can carry as many as twenty orders at a time, with up to 100 orders total in a single day. The vehicles have safety operators who unload orders and leave them at the customers’ doorstep.

The company has additionally worked with city officials in Fremont to distribute meals to emergency shelter programs.

Cruise Self-Driving Vehicles Have been Put to Work in San Francisco

General Motors owns Cruise, a company that is using some of its self-driving electric vehicles (each of which is staffed by two safety drivers) to help local partners like the San Francisco New Deal and San Francisco Marin Food Bank. The vehicles are being used to deliver food in the city in a contact-free, door to door situation.

Nuro, another company out of San Francisco, has launched two initiatives with its automated vehicles. First, it is offering contactless delivery to health care facilities, including medical supplies. In San Mateo, the vehicles are transporting food, water, and supplies to facilities created to help with the health crisis.
