The stats on liver damage in car accidents

One study looked at drivers and passengers in California car accidents. They assessed more than 51,000 car accidents that led to liver injuries between the years of 2010 and 2015. They found that adults who had their seatbelts on during an accident and suffered a liver injury generally saw less severe liver injuries and their chances of surviving significantly improved.

The study further showed that a person wearing a seatbelt had a 21% lower chance of having severe liver damage compared to a person who was not wearing a seatbelt. When a person was both wearing a seatbelt and in a vehicle in which the airbags deployed, they were 26% less likely to have severe liver damage compared to a person with neither airbags or a seatbelt.

Of the 51,000+ people who had liver injuries caused by car accidents, those who had serious liver injuries were twice as likely not to survive the crash, compared to those who had mild or moderate injuries to their injuries. A person who had a severe liver injury had a 14% chance of having surgery, compared to a person with a mild liver injury who had only a 5% chance of having surgery.
