Do These Railroad Accident Statistics Surprise You?

If you had to guess, how many people do you think died between 2012 and 2016 when trying to cross railroad tracks? Would you be surprised to learn that it was over 1,200 people? In 2016 alone there were more than 2,040 incidents at railroad crossings, which lead to the deaths of 264 people. Keep in mind that there are upwards of 215,000 railroad crossings throughout the country. A vehicle or person is struck by a train every three hours, on average.

Safety tips for Railroad Crossings

To stay as safe as possible, the NHTSA recommends following a few tips. First, they say that you should always be ready to stop at a railroad crossing. Slow down at each crossing and look both ways, in addition to listening for a train. Remember that even if there are signs and warning devices, they could not be working correctly – you do not want to be the victim of a mistake. When you see a train coming, never try to cross, even if it seems like there is plenty of time and room. Your vehicle could stall at the very worst time and you could lose your life.
