Train Accident Statistics

According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA):

  • Fatal train accidents in California rose almost 21% from 2015 to 2016.
  • Non-fatal train accidents in California rose more than 15% from 2015 to 2016.
  • California accounted for 20% of the fatal accidents but only 8% of the non-fatal accidents reported by all the states.

While the overall number of reported non-fatal highway-rail crossings accidents fell 20% between 2015 and 2016 the number of non-fatal highway-rail crossing accidents in California increased by almost 48%.
