Most new cars are relatively safe

The good news is that any new car a California driver is going to buy is likely to have the latest technology that can help improve safety and lower the chance of injury in an accident. That said, some trucks and cars are safer than others. This is according to a report by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI).

A lighter car is generally a less safe car

It is likely not surprising that a car that is lighter and smaller is not as safe as a larger, heavier car or truck. HLDI found that a four-door micro vehicle has the most damage reported and the most injuries for occupants during an accident. A mini-car was somewhat better but still not good compared to the rest of the options. Those that have the fewest claims of injury or property including luxury SUVs and pickup trucks.

A look at individual models

The above statistics cover general types of vehicles but what about individual models? The cars with the highest claim severity rates are small sports cars. Those with the lowest severity rate? Small luxury cars. As far as personal injury claims go, the smaller a vehicle is the more likely it is to result in a claim. Why? Some experts believe that it is because younger, less experienced drivers are more likely to drive smaller luxury cars because they are more affordable.

A closer look is required for a true understanding of the issues

When a person looks at the list of all the cars and the number of personal injury claims it is not always enough to just look at the numbers. For example, most of the cars with the fewest personal injury claims are sports cars. Does this mean that sports cars are safer? More likely, these numbers are low because sports cars are generally not driven as many miles as a family sedan and because sports cars are more likely to have just a single passenger.

Regardless of the vehicle involved, if you have been in a truck or car accident then we encourage you to contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. You can reach Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas at 909-982-0707 for a free legal consultation.
