Anti-lock brakes are very effective in lowering crash statistics

A recent study has shown that anti-lock brakes can be extremely effect in preventing motorcycle accidents. The study was completed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the results were clear that if a motorcycle was equipped with an anti-lock braking system, its changes of being involved in a fatal motorcycle accident was a full 31% less likely.

Anti-lock brakes are still relatively new for motorcycles

Anyone who only drives a car may wonder why this study took so long to come out. After all, cars have had anti-lock brake systems for many years. The reality is that it’s actually a pretty new advancement for motorcycles. Since they’ve become more common in newer bikes, the number of collision claims overall for motorcycles has decreased, as has how frequently riders report being injured.

Just how common are fatal motorcycle accidents?

Just like they do in a car, anti-lock brakes help prevent the wheels of a motorcycle from locking up. This lets the rider stop more quickly and more safely than they would be able to without the anti-lock system. The federal government did a study on how they can help keep motorcycle accidents and injuries to a minimum, and they found that for every 10,000 registered motorcycles in the U.S., there are just under four fatal accidents for bikes with ABS and over five for bikes without it.

Not all motorcycles have ABS systems

As of today, it’s not required for motorcycles to have an anti-lock brake system. However, it’s become a popular feature. As a result, about half of the motorcycles sold new today offer anti-lock systems as an optional feature, while two out of ten offer them as a standard feature. If you’re in the market for a new motorcycle, this research seems to indicate that it would be worth it to add ABS if it’s not already include. There’s no question that a motorcycle rider is more susceptible to accidents and this could help.
